Farscape premiered back in 1999 on Sci-Fi, and it was first original full series for them. It was created by Rockne S. O’Bannon and Brian Henson with Creature Shop of The Jim Henson Company. They made 4 full seasons and a TV movie, and over the years, it was released in several different editions, but never as The Complete Series. Until now. Last 2009 was 10 years anniversary of the series, and right time for such release.

Package

Farscape: The Complete Series Box Set contain 26 DVD’s. Each of four seasons in on 6 DVD’s and there are 2 more Extras DVD’s. Each season is in a separate box, and they are standard DVD boxes, but that’s much better solution than use of slim or other similar boxes, because DVD’s are safe in the box from damaging. All 5 boxes are packed in the cardboard box. It would be good that it’s hard box and that it can be opened only on one side, not both.

But, it’s not a big deal, box as a whole looks great. The set I received from Amazon had no problems, and all 26 DVD’s were without scratches and they all played without any problems.

Video

I had previously released ADV version of the Farscape (Starburst edition), and this one looks better. First season has better colors, they are more vivid and there is almost no noise that was present on the original releases. You can see the difference in quality while watching some of the extras for the first season. Video transfer is really excellent and this proves that maybe in the future we can expect full Blu-Ray release of Farscape. You can really enjoy in all the details and visual effects with this release, really excellent quality.

Farscape DVD’s

All episodes are presented in their original aspect ratios of 4:3 for first 3 seasons and 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen for season four. Extras are mostly in 4:3, with some later in widescreen.

Audio

Audio is another big improvement from the ADV releases, and 5.1 mix sounds much, much better. If you have good audio 5.1 capable equipment you will really enjoy the depth of the sound, excellent music and everything else. In all 88 episodes dialogs are crystal clear, and you will not miss anything.

Extras

All original extras from ADV releases are here, but you will find much, much more new material. Starting with audio commentaries (33 in total, several recorded for this release), many new interviews, featurettes and behind the scenes clips. Also, there are over 30 deleted scenes and also several director’s cuts showing the progression of the edition for the episode and some never before seen elements of the episodes some without effects even.

Season 2 Menus

For season 2, for the first time you can see episode called Reunion, that is different edit/cut of the ‘Dream a little dream’, and it was planned as a season premiere. Extras include Undressed special and Zhan Forever documentaries, as well as composer Guy Gross featurettes and much more.

Menus

They are partially animated, and look really good, but nothing out of ordinary. They are easy to navigate and use. But, more animations would look nice. And here we are at one and only negative side of this box. There are no subtitles. Not even english. Original ADV releases also were without subtitles, and A&E for some reason decided not to include them here.

But, you don’t really need them, and I didn’t noticed that I can’t hear or understand dialog, and never actually needed subtitles.

Conclusion

Even without subtitles, this is amazing box set and a must have for all fans of the series. And if you didn’t watched Farscape yet, this is a right moment to buy the box and start watching.
