Viewers expected much more from Atlantis, and for the most part, series ended up as copy of SG-1. And that's one of the reasons that ratings started to drop during second season. They moved the series to another galaxy, replaced Goa-uld with Wraiths, improved visual effects, but the formula stayed the same, format stayed the same. But still, despite all that, Atlantis is fun to watch because characters are good.

Here is the series about amazing story of the city that people are searching for years. SG-1 creators had not difficult time to imagine the lost city of Atlantis. With current technology and computer animation they created this city. This is very different story about Atlantis built on the the basic mythology created for Stargate SG-1. Brad Wright (creator of SG-1) and Robert C. Cooper are responsible for, this, another SG series.

Since I have watched complete Stargate at least several times, I always there was always something wrong about this season and that something is missing. But, I watched it again recently and I must admit that this is an excellent season, with several key story plots, resolutions of some older plots and some very funny episodes. Showtime also invested more money, and visually this is so far the best looking season of Stargate.

Stargate SG-1 season 3 is definitly my favorite of the early seasons produced for Showtime. This season features more diverse writing and much more in terms of developing Stargate mythology than first two seasons did, and overcomes the initial writers limitations. This is first season that finally takes advantage of the Stargate concept and almost unlimited pool of ideas that goes beyond the only egyptian gods and mythology.

Stargate SG-1 season 2 is an improvement in terms of story, and not much else. But for SG-1 that was very important because it sets new rules and opens much more possibilities for development. Series is produced by MGM for the Showtime, and at the time it was one of the highest rated series they aired. Many more TV stations syndicated SG-1 soon after the original broadcast and the number of fans was growing all over the world.

But, the cast had to be replaced, and for the most part they made really good choices. Movie is not really used that much as a point of reference, and except for the gate, some main characters and few minor things, series has very little in common with the movie, and series is really much better.

Stargate SG-1 is longest running sci-fi show in the history, and it's started with the pilot episode called Children of the Gods. Now, 12 years later, show creators decided to re-cut this iconic episode and release it again. Basically, this is the same episode as the one aired originally with new special effects, some scenes removed, and few scenes added back. Intention was to fix some of the story related problems and give this episode the better look.
