Life on Mars run for two seasons, and the story was wrapped up and there was no need to make any more episodes. But the basic idea is just too good to let it go, and so the new series is created. But, instead of Sam Tyler we have a new main character and time traveler of sorts. And the new time traveling destination is now 1981. No matter how similar idea is, these Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are very different series.
